Mr. Rajat Gupta was born at Maniktala in Calcutta. Mr. Gupta received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1971 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He obtained an MBA degree from the Harvard School of Business Administration in 1973.
Mr. Gupta joined McKinsey & Company Incorporated in 1973 in its New York Office. He assumed leadership of its Scandinavian office in 1982 and joined its Chicago office in 1987. He assumed the role of Office Manager in Chicago in 1989 and was elected its Managing Director in 1994. McKinsey & Company is one of the world’s most influential and prestigious management consultancy firms having a management consultancy of $1.3 billion with 62 offices in 31 countries.
Mr. Gupta has a broad range of consulting experience with a variety of industrial organizations, including companies in power generation, telecommunication, construction, and transmission equipment. He has directed a number of projects in such companies to improve the overall performance, develop new product/market strategies, and reorganize to improve effectiveness. His primary focus has been to reduce costs and restructure the company, in a changing industry/competitive situation.
He is Member, Advisory Boards of Kellog School of Management, and Harvard Business School Club. He is also a Member, Board of Directors, Northwestern Memorial Corporation.
He is the first Managing Director of McKinsey’s to have been born outside the USA. He has a remarkable capacity for being helpful to people of all walks of life that come into contact with him, which is untarnished by his professional success.
