Dr. Naren K. Gupta received his Bachelor of Technology Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1969 and was awarded the Director’s Gold Medal and President’s Gold Medal for the best performance in the B.Tech. graduating class of 1969. He obtained an MS degree from the California Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. degree from Stanford University. Stanford, USA.
After his Ph.D., Dr. Gupta joined the Systems Control Inc. wherein he made important contributions to the development of system identification from test data which are being used even today in the automotive and aerospace industries. This work of Dr. Gupta won him the prestigious 1978 Donal P.Eckman Award of the American Control Council, awarded annually to the best control engineer under the age of 30 years. Dr. Gupta also began to develop financial and managerial skills in running a variety of projects and held a series of progressively higher management positions.
Dr. Gupta founded Integrated System Inc. in 1980 with the moral support of his wife and is currently its Chairman. It was here that the entrepreneurial talents of Dr. Gupta really blossomed. The company carried out studies and projects for the United States Government. The Company devised a user-friendly package integrating together several analyses and design software tools. This led to MATRIX-X, the first high-level control design package, now in worldwide use. Dr. Gupta recognized the importance of high-quality software tools for programming the micro-controllers that are being used in a variety of increasingly sophisticated applications, not just calculators and watches but in fax machines, smartphones, ignition control in engines, cellular phones, etc. The exponentially decreasing costs of integrated circuits coupled with their exponentially growing capabilities have led to an explosion in the application of embedded micro-controllers. Dr. Gupta’s leadership abilities have put the Company in the forefront of this wave. In addition to the US, the Company has started its operations in Canada, Europe, Japan, India, Israel, and Korea. In 1996, the Company crossed a revenue of $ 100 million from less than 25 million in 1991. The Company has received mention as one of the best companies in the US from various business magazines.
In honoring Dr. Gupta, we recognize the outstanding contributions made by an alumnus of IIT Delhi as a Systems Engineer and as an Entrepreneur who has earned recognition and through achievement brought glory to the name of the Institute.
