Mr. Anil Sood was born on November 7, 1949, at New Delhi. Supported by a Government of India Merit Scholarship, he started his schooling at Mayo College, Ajmer and then joined Modern School, New Delhi. He was awarded the Gold Medal for being the topper in the All India Higher Secondary Board. Joining Mechanical Engineering discipline in Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Shri Sood graduated in 1971 and was awarded Silver Medal for being at the top of his class He completed his MS Engineering from Cornell University in 1973 and his MBA from the Harvard Business School where he was honored as a Baker Scholar for graduating at the top of his class in 1975.
Shri Sood joined the World Bank as part of its prestigious “Young Professionals Program” in 1975 and worked on managing a wide range of industrial projects in different developing countries worldwide. In the early 1980s, he contributed to the Bank’s first projects in support of technology development and the buildup of the electronics industry infrastructure in the Republic of Korea. In the mid-1980s, he led the creation and development of the Bank’s methodology and capacity in the areas of restructuring of industry, public sector reform, and privatization. From 1987- 1992, Shri Sood helped to manage the World Bank’s policy and reform dialogue and support to countries in Central and Eastern Europe and, subsequently, the Republics of the former Soviet Union, in their transition toward a market economy. His experience included management positions in Industry and Energy, Finance, Private Sector Development, and Economic Management.
In the mid-1990s, he helped to manage the Bank’s regional operations (loans, policy, reform, capacity building, and advice) across all countries and sectors in Europe and Central Asia. At the same time, Shri Sood was called upon to manage the design and startup of networks of staff (and ultimately, client country counterparts and development partners) in the areas of Human Development, Finance and Private Sector Development, Environment and Social Development, and Poverty Reduction with a focus on strengthening strategy, quality, skills building, and knowledge creation and management. He was also responsible for implementing a renewal program in a major part of the Bank.
In 1999, Shri Sood was appointed to his current position as Vice President, Strategy and Resource Management, and carries the responsibility for helping to formulate and support the implementation of the World Bank’s worldwide strategy, to allocate and monitor the use of the Bank’s resources in support of its worldwide operations, and to build its capacity to deliver on its mission to reduce poverty worldwide.
