Born on March 8, 1955, Mr. Pradeep Gupta completed his B Tech in Elect. Engg. from IIT Delhi in 1975. Later he completed his MBA from the IIM Calcutta in 1977 and started his career with HCL Ltd. as the head of its Software Development facility in the Eastern Zone. Backed by a pioneering spirit and a few friends he launched in Dec. 1982 ‘Dataquest’ magazine which grew rapidly and till today remains a barometer for the Indian IT industry. This was followed by many other products and services which today make Cyber Media India Ltd. the leader in the IT-media industry. The company is guided by the philosophy of remaining far ahead of the times. This has helped CMIL achieve revenues of Rs.700 million through its dedicated 350 people. Its products in the field of publishing are Dataquest, PC Quest, Voice & Data, Computers @ Home, DQ Channels India, and DQ Weeks.
With changing time and needs Mr. Gupta has propelled the organization into other areas. These include IDC India Ltd. – a market research organization, Cyber India Online Ltd. – which started the era of infotech web publishing as early as 1996, Cyber Multimedia Ltd. which develops multimedia software and was started in 1996, and Cyberexpo Limited – a company which organizes computer expos in more than 50 cities across the country. He has now launched the School of Convergence at International Management Institute to train content creators and managers for the emerging convergence economy. He is one of the founders of SQL Star International Ltd. a company engaged in software exports. He has set up an angel fund in partnership with others to provide venture capital to startups.
Mr. Gupta was the driver of a strategic consultancy, funded by the World Bank, to formulate India’s software export strategy. He was a member of the “Study Team on Microelectronics” for Deptt. of Electronics, Govt. of India to recommend Microelectronic strategies for India. He is also a member of the Working Group on IT for the Government of NCT of Delhi. Soft-spoken and down-to-earth he works and carries forward an approach based on consensus and involvement of all concerned. This has helped in increasing the effectiveness of all the institutions and organizations that he has worked with.
Mr. Gupta has been honored with many recognitions which include the Hellen Keller Award by National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People, Award for Outstanding Contribution towards National Development by IIT Delhi Alumni Association, Bharat Vikas Award by International Business Council and the Award of Excellence by IEC Software Ltd. Other positions that he contributes to include Chairman – e-gurucool.com; Member – IT Vision Group, Govt. of Punjab, Investment Management Committee, Punjab Venture Capital Ltd.; Board of Governors – Maharshi Institute of Management, Xansa Ltd., Institute of Management Studies; Board of Advisors – Amity IT Vision Board, Aiesec – Delhi University, Aravali Institute of Management; President – IIM Calcutta Alumni Association, Delhi; Ex-President, IIT Delhi Alumni Association.
