Prof. Sharad Malik

Prof. Sharad Malik received his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1985 and was a recipient of the President’s Gold Medal. He subsequently received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1987 and 1990 respectively.
Prof. Malik is currently the George Van Ness Lothrop Professor of Engineering and the Director for the Center for Innovation in Engineering Education at Princeton University.
Prof. Malik has been on the faculty in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University since 1991. During 1998, he was the Ram Rajindra Malhotra Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Delhi. He has served as the General Chair for the Design Automation Conference (2004) and the Co-chair of the Computer-Aided Verification Conference (2008). He has been on the editorial boards of several leading journals in the area of Electronic Systems and Design Automation. He is currently the Associate Director of the Gigascale Systems Research Center, a multi-university effort directed towards defining and developing electronic system design methodology with a ten year horizon.
Prof. Malik has published numerous papers, book chapters and a book describing his research. His research spans all aspects of computer engineering with contributions in several areas in the synthesis and verification of computing systems. His research in functional timing analysis and Boolean satisfiability has been widely used in industrial electronic design automation tools. In addition to his teaching computer engineering students, he is actively involved in teaching engineering to non-engineering students. He has also worked on educational programs that span the boundaries between engineering disciplines as well as engineering and the humanities/social sciences.
Prof. Malik’s research has been recognised through several Best Paper Awards, as well as the 2009 Computer-Aided Verification Award for fundamental contributions to the development of high-performance Boolean Satisfiability Solvers. He has received numerous teaching awards including the Princeton University President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching (2009). He is a Fellow of the IEEE.
