Dr. Jai Menon received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1986. He subsequently received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science from Cornell University, USA in 1989 and 1992 respectively. He has also completed executive management programs from Harvard, Wharton (U Penn) and Sloan (MIT) Business Schools.
Dr. Menon is currently the Group Director – IT of Bharti Enterprises where he serves as the Global CIO for all businesses across 19 countries, including telecom, retail, financial services, tower-co, manufacturing/ distribution, agriculture, software and training. In addition, he is a key leader of Bharti’s ongoing global expansion into emerging markets in Africa where he leads IT, network, customer service and product innovation across all operations in Africa.
Dr. Menon started his career at IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Labs, USA and rose to become an executive Director in IBM’s Software Group leading rich media across labs in USA, Israel, China and Japan. Before joining Bharti, he was Corporate Officer and EVP at AT&T (formerly BellSouth), USA where he managed a portfolio of growth businesses and strategic alliances. At AT&T, he also played the role of Chief Technology Officer (eCTO) across all lines of businesses. He joined Bharti in August 2002 as Corporate Director, launched Airtel’s Enterprise Business as its Joint President in 2004 and has led IT and Customer Service as its Director for Airtel India/South Asia.
Dr. Menon has played a key leadership role in pioneering “outcome oriented S1” IT business models that are global case studies (e.g. Harvard, University of Michigan). He has led technologies for communication, content, commerce and computing across mobile, broadband/PC and television devices. He has also led cloud computing for SME businesses, voice and vernacular applications for rural sectors as well as technologies for G2C applications.
Dr. Menon has received several global recognitions, including Global CIO 50, Forbes Outsourcing Award, GSMA Award, TechForum Global IT Award, Telecom Asia Award, IDC Asia-Pacific Enterprise Innovation Award, Most Influential Technology Leader, NASSCOM-CNBC IT Award, CIO Hall of Fame Award, CIO 100, NASSCOM National IT Innovation Award, MIS Asia IT Awards, PC Expo Award, National Design Engineering Award and ASME Distinguished Engineering Awards.
Dr. Menon has authored over 60 international publications, filed over 30 US patents, served on several editorial boards and has chaired international conferences. He serves on boards of Comviva Technologies and Beetel Teletech and advisory boards of TMF, Center for CIO Leadership, GSMA EMC, IBM, Oracle and Teradata.
In honouring Dr. Jai Menon, IIT Delhi recognizes the outstanding contributions made by him as a Corporate Leader and Researcher. Through his achievements, Dr. Jai Menon has brought glory to the name of the Institute.
