Prof. R.C. Budhani

Prof. R.C. Budhani

Award Year: 2012 | Degree Year: 1982

Prof. R.C. Budhani received his Ph.D. degree in Condensed Matter Physics from IIT Delhi in 1982. Prior to this, he obtained his M.Sc. in Physics from Allahabad University.

Prof. Budhani currently is the Director of the National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi. He also is a J. C. Bose National Fellow of the Department of Science & Technology, President of the Metrology Society of India, Vice President of the Materials Research Society of India, and Director, International R&D Cooperation, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.

Prof. Budhani was a research scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles during the period 1984-87 and a staff scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York from 1988 till 1994. He then joined the Physics Department at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur as Associate Professor in 1994 and became a full Professor in 1997.

Prof. Budhani’s major research contributions are diverse, spanning the fields of superconductivity in thin films and superlattices, dynamics of vortex state in superconductors, electronic phases in highly correlated systems, physics of magnetic tunnel junctions, electronic reconstructions at thin film

interfaces, thin film and bulk thermoelectrics, science and technology of thin films including laser processing of materials and physics of glassy metals. While at IIT Delhi, he was the first researcher in the country to develop a novel melt spinning process for synthesis of a new glassy state of binary and ternary alloys. He contributed significantly to the development of strategic technologies for high performance aircraft wind shields, turbine engines and space quality zero expansion glasses during his tenure at University of California Los Angeles.

Prof. Budhani is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India. He also has been a visiting professor at the Center for Superconductivity Research, University of Maryland, a Guest Scientist at CRISMAT Laboratory, Caen, France and Brookhaven Laboratory, and Joliot Fellow of ESPCI, Paris.

In honouring Prof. R.C. Budhani, IIT Delhi recognizes the outstanding contributions made by him as a Researcher and Educator. Through his achievements, Prof. R.C. Budhani has brought glory to the name of the Institute.
