Prof. Trilochan Sastry

Prof. Trilochan Sastry received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1981. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad in 1983, and after two years in the corporate sector, obtained a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Operations Research in 1990.

Prof. Sastry currently is a Professor of Quantitative Methods & Information Systems at IIM Bangalore, where he has been since 2003.

Before joining IIM Bangalore, Prof. Sastry was a faculty member at IIM Ahmedabad. He has been a visiting faculty or scholar at MIT, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, International University of Japan, and was a Professor at the Indian School of Business.

Prof. Sastry is closely involved with various civil society initiatives and movements. He is the Chairman of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), which he founded in 1999, and has established a network called National Election Watch, which involves over 1200 non-political, civil society organizations in every part of the country. ADR has brought in far-reaching electoral reforms, including transparency in candidate and political party information for the first time since Independence. It continues to raise voter awareness through its Citizen Election Watch campaigns. He also is the founder and CEO of the Centre for Collective Development, which promotes small farmer cooperatives in rain-fed, drought-prone regions of India to enable large numbers of them to earn much higher incomes without subsidy. Both these organizations are pioneering and have become models for replication and scaling around the country.

Prof. Sastry has received various awards and appointments in the past including Membership of the Bretton Woods Committee, Dean and Member of the Board at IIM Bangalore, “Outstanding Contribution to National Development” Award from IIT Delhi Alumni Association, World Economic Forums’ Young Global Leader Award in 2008, Best Young Teacher Award from the Association of Indian Management Schools in 1999, Toastmasters International Award in 2011 and Citizen Extraordinaire Award from the Rotary Club, Bangalore, 2009. He also is on the Board of the National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

In honouring Prof. Trilochan Sastry, IIT Delhi recognizes the outstanding contributions made by him in Public Policy and Service. Through his achievements, Prof. Trilochan Sastry has brought glory to the name of the Institute.
