Prof. Rajpal S. Sirohi received his Post M.Sc. Diploma in Applied Optics (Physics) and Ph.D. degree in Physics from IIT Delhi in 1965 & 1970 respectively.
Prof. Sirohi is currently the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Chair Professor at the Central University, Tezpur, Assam and Senior Editor of Optical Engineering, a journal published by SPIE, USA.
Prof. Sirohi was closely associated with IIT Delhi for over 40 years in various capacities, as a student, faculty member and finally, as its Director. After receiving his Post M.Sc. Diploma, he worked as a Scientific Officer in the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and as a researcher in University of Pennsylvania. He then returned to IIT Delhi in July 1968, where he earned his Post M.Sc. Diploma, he worked as a Scientific Officer in the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and as a researcher in University of Pennsylvania. He then returned to IIT Delhi in July 1968, where he earned his Ph.D. and became an ad-hoc Lecturer in the Physics
Department. In March 1971, he joined IIT Madras as Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and was Professor in the Department of Physics from September 1979 to December 2000.He was then appointed as the Director of IIT Delhi and served in this capacity till April 2005, when he formally retired from service.
Over his career, Prof. Sirohi has held visiting positions in various universities and research laboratories worldwide. He also has been Chairman of the governing bodies of various institutions. After retiring from IIT Delhi, he was Vice-Chancellor at several Universities.
Prof. Sirohi has obtained numerous honors and awards including the Humboldt Research Award by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany (1995); Galileo Galilei Award of International Commission for Optics (1995); the Albert Einstein Silver Medal, UNESCO (2000); Sir C. V. Raman Award: Physical Sciences by University Grants Commission (2002); NRDC Technology Invention Award (2003); Padma Shri, a National Civilian Award by Government of India (2004); Sir C. V. Raman Birth Centenary Award by Indian Science Congress Association (2005); Life-Time Achievement Award by Optical Society of India (2007); and the Gabor Award by SPIE (The International Society for Optical Engineering) USA (2009).
Prof. Sirohi is Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering; National Academy of Sciences, India; Optical Society of India; Optical Society of America and The International Society for Optical Engineering(SPIE). He has written more than 300 research papers and authored/co-authored/edited 13 books.
In honouring Prof. Rajpal S. Sirohi, IIT Delhi recognizes the outstanding contributions made by him as a Researcher and Educator. Through his achievements, Prof. Rajpal S. Sirohi has brought glory to the name of the Institute.
