Award Year: 2013 | Degree Year: 1980
Dr. T. S. Ramakrishnan received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1980. He received his Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago.
Currently, Dr. Ramakrishnan directs research on enhanced and unconventional recovery at Schlumberger.
Following his doctoral work, Dr. Ramakrishnan joined Schlumberger’s research center as a scientist on production evaluation. Later, he moved to the center’s rock-lab where he developed new methods to measure flow properties of rocks; these methods have been adopted widely. He also built systems to verify the physics behind the highly successful formation tester.
During his tenure in the flow in porous media program, he worked on drilling fluid invasion and array induction measurements resulting in the introduction of relative permeability logging to the industry. He also led the effort that integrated nuclear density and neutron logging, NMR, shear and compressional acoustic velocities, and resistivity array data. This was the basis of Schlumberger’s Carbonate Interpretation Platform. In 1990s, he initiated research on reservoir monitoring and control before heading the company’s research efforts on carbon dioxide storage. He also represented Schlumberger in the founding of the Global Climate and Energy Project at Stanford University. As head of the carbon storage effort, with his colleagues, he built a basic understanding of gravity tongues, dissolution induced instability, flow hysteresis, and asymptotic solutions of nonlinear advection-diffusion operators. He has also advised students at various universities during their thesis work.
Dr. Ramakrishnan was a distinguished lecturer of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) in 2005-6, and elected a distinguished member of SPE in 2003. He received the SPE Formation Evaluation award in 2009. His papers won the Henri-Doll award of Schlumberger in 1995 and 1997, and the SPWLA best paper award in 1998. His B.Tech. thesis was given the Acharya P.C. Ray award in 1980. In 2012, he received the Charles W. Pierce distinguished alumni award at IIT, Chicago.
In honouring Dr. T.S. Ramakrishnan, IIT Delhi recognizes the outstanding contributions made by him as a Corporate Leader. Through his achievements, Dr T.S. Ramakrishnan has brought glory to the name of the Institute.
