Dr Avinash Chander received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1972. He subsequently received his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from JNTU, Hyderabad.
Presently, Dr Avinash Chander is the – Scientific Adviser to the Raksha Mantri & Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, and Director General, DRDO. From the humble beginning, his accomplishments as a top Missile Technologist elevated Dr Avinash Chander to many important positions like Director, Advanced Systems Laboratory, Programme Director, Agni and Chief Controller R&D Missiles & Strategic Systems.
He now holds the highest position after his illustrious career spanning over four decades in DRDO. He has been the driving force for DRDO instituting a strong culture of R&D for design and development of advanced Defence technologies indigenously. His sustained efforts made India a reckonable global force in Defence technologies. He is Distinguished Scientist of International repute in Defence technologies.
A visionary, Dr Avinash Chander revitalised DRDO by imbibing major changes in the organization culture and giving a new direction towards research in advanced technologies. He brought completely new dimension to the Defence R&D by intensifying research and spearheading the new thrust in Medium and Long Range Surface to Air Missiles, Tanks, Guns,Aeronautical Systems, Air Defence, Laser Weapons, Armaments, Long Range Weapons and Cruise Missiles.He has been a pioneer in the inertial navigation, guidance, simulation and system design of missile. Under his leadership, India successfully designed and developed ‘5000 Km range AGNI 5 Strategic Weapon System’ propelling the country to the elite club of five advanced nations having ICBM capability and bringing a quantum jump in critical technologies. He has also designed the Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle (MIRV) and Maneuvering Re-entry Vehicle (MaRV) for future missions. With his innovative contributions and hallmark achievements, Dr Avinash Chander “Brought India on to the global forefront in Missiles and Strategic Systems”.
Dr Avinash Chander has received many honours and awards. To cite a few, he has been conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri Award, Dr Biren Roy Space Science & Design Award, Lokmanya Tilak Award, Technology Leadership Award of DRDO, Rocketry & related technologies award of Astronautical Society of India. He is a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering, AP Academy of Sciences, Honorary Fellow of IETE and Fellow of many other leading professional Scientific/Engineering Academies and Institutes. He has been conferred with Honorary Doctorates from several reputed Universities across the country.
In honouring Dr Avinash Chander, IIT Delhi recognizes the outstanding contributions made by him as a Researcher. Through his achievements, Dr Avinash Chander has brought glory to the name of the Institute.
