Dr. Manish Gupta

Dr. Manish Gupta received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Computer Science & Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1987. He subsequently received his Masters degree from Ohio State University and Ph.D. from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

Dr. Gupta presently is the Vice President and Director of Xerox Research Center India.

Dr. Gupta joined the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York in 1992.He joined Goldman Sachs India as Managing Director, Technology Division, and later, Xerox India. He leads a team at Xerox conducting research in areas like data analytics and mobile computing applied to problems in industry verticals such as healthcare, transportation and education, with a special focus on developing breakthrough solutions for emerging markets like India.

Dr. Gupta is a renowned researcher in the field of compilers and high performance computing and a respected technology leader. He is well known for leading the software research for an ambitious IBM project called Blue Gene which became the world’s fastest supercomputer in 2005. Dr. Gupta helped transform Blue Gene/L from a research project into a successful product offering from IBM (which accounts for 4 of the fastest 10 machines in the world today). IBM received a National Medal of Technology and Innovation from US President Barack Obama in October 2009 for the invention of Blue Gene. Dr. Gupta is also known for advancing the state of the art in optimizing Java Virtual Machines and compiling for parallel machines. He has co-authored over 75 papers and has been granted more than 15 US patents. As Director of IBM Research – India (IRL), he helped establish IRL as a world class lab. In his current role at Xerox, Dr. Gupta is leading efforts to create another world class research lab in India.

Dr. Gupta has received an Outstanding Innovation Award, two Outstanding Technical Achievement Awards and the Lou Gerstner Team Award for Client Excellence at IBM for his work on Blue Gene, Java Virtual Machine optimizations and compilers for massively parallel machines. He has served on the Committee of Visitors for the US National Science Foundation. Dr. Gupta has been recognized by the Association for Computing Machinery as an ACM Fellow.

In honouring Dr. Manish Gupta, IIT Delhi recognizes the outstanding contributions made by him as a corporate leader. Through his achievements, Dr.Manish Gupta has brought glory to the name of the Institute.
