Mr. Jayant Sinha received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Chemical Engineering with Distinction from IIT Delhi in 1985. He subsequently received a Master of Science degree in Energy Management & Policy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987. Later, Mr. Jayant Sinha also attended Harvard Business School, USA and obtained an MBA with Distinction in 1992.
Mr. Jayant Sinha is presently the Union Minister of State for Finance in the Government of India
After completing his MBA at Harvard Business School in 1992, Mr. Sinha joined McKinsey & Company in Boston, and went on to become a Partner at its Boston and New Delhi offices. At McKinsey, Mr. Jayant Sinha co-led the global Software and IT Services Practice. He also spent several years as a Managing Director at Courage Capital, a billion dollar global special situations hedge fund. Until 2013, he was a Partner at Omidyar Network, an investment firm with over $850 million in invested capital, where he led the overall investment strategy and operations in India.
The spirit of public service, which runs through Mr. Jayant Sinha’s family, prompted him to serve the people of his country. Hence, in early 2014, he quit his successful professional career and joined full-time public life. He helped Shri Narendra Modi ji in framing national economic policies for the BJP, including organizing and hosting an international business leaders’ forum in February, 2014. Mr. Sinha then contested the Lok Sabha elections from his home-town of Hazaribagh in Jharkhand, which he won by a massive margin, making him only the second IITian to become a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament.
As a Parliamentarian, Mr. Sinha served on several important committees, such as the Standing Committee on Finance and the Public Accounts Committee, and completed major development projects in his constituency. As a Minister, he has assisted the Hon’ble Prime Minister and Hon’ble Finance Minister in driving landmark initiatives such as PM Jan Dhan Yojana, PM Jan Suraksha Yojana, PM Mudra Yojana, devising the Indradhanush package for public sector banks, passing of the Insurance bill in Parliament, setting up the National Infrastructure and Investment Fund, launching the India Aspiration Fund to promote entrepreneurship, and strengthening India’s capital markets. He also helped in preparing the Union Budget 2015-16, which was widely hailed as one of the most significant and visionary budgets in recent years.
In honouring Mr. Jayant Sinha, IIT Delhi recognizes the outstanding contributions made by him in Public Policy and Service. Through his achievements, Mr. Jayant Sinha has brought glory to the Institute.
