Prof. Soumitra Dutta

Prof. Soumitra Dutta received a Bachelor of Technology Degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1985 from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi followed by Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from University of California, Berkeley.

Prof. Soumitra Dutta is currently the Founding Dean of Cornell SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University, New York. The college comprises of the three management schools at Cornell. Most recently, Prof. Soumitra has been centrally involved in the development of Cornell Tech, Cornell’s new campus in Manhattan. Before this, Prof. Dutta served as the eleventh dean of the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Corness University. He has also served as the Roland Berger Chaired Professor of Business and Technology, founder and academic director of the eLab at INSEAD, a top-ranked graduate business school in Fountainebleau, France. Prior to this, during his 22-year tenure at INSEAD, Prof. Dutta also served as dean of external relations; dean of executive education; and dean of technology and e-learning. Prof. Dutta has been a visiting professor in the Haas School of Business at Berkeley, Oxford Internet Institute at University of Oxford, and Judge School at University of Cambridge in England. He has lived and worked in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, including stints as an engineer with GE in the U.S. and Schlumberger in Japan.

Prof. Dutta is an authority on the impact of new technology on the business world, especially social media and social networking, and on strategies for driving growth and innovation by embracing the digital economy. Prof, Dutta is best known for being the architect (and main editor) of the Global Innovation Index, which now has become the global standard among innovation indices (co-published with Intellectual Property Organization-WIPO). He is also the co-editor and author of another influential reports in technology and innovation-The Global Information Technology Report (co-published with the World Economic Forum). Both reports have been used by several governments around the world in assessing and planning their technology and innovation policies.

Prof. Dutta has published extensively (papers and books) on issues of technology and business, with a particular focus on the potential of the digital technologies for enhancing innovation.

In honouring Prof. Soumitra Dutta, IIT Delhi recognizes the outstanding contributions made by him in Teaching and Research. Through his achievements, Prof. Soumitra Dutta has brought glory to the Institute.
