Dr Nalin Shinghal

Dr Nalin Shinghal completed his B.Tech. (Electrical Engineering) from IIT Delhi in 1985 and PGDM from IIM Calcutta in 1987. He has been a Commonwealth Scholar with a PhD in Transport Economics from the University of Leeds/ UK. He is currently the Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a Govt of India CPSE and one of India’s largest engineering and manufacturing organisations.
Under his leadership, BHEL is currently undertaking a multi-dimensional transformational strategy for making the company a Future-Ready Global Engineering Organisation.
Earlier, in his career spanning over 30 years, he has undertaken various assignments in Private Sector, Public Sector and Government. He joined the Indian Railways Traffic Service (IRTS) in 1989 and worked in Operations, Commercial, Marketing and long-range infrastructure planning functions of Indian Railways.
In addition to BHEL, he has worked with four CPSEs in very diverse business areas, including CONCOR (logistics), IRCTC (Hospitality, tourism, IT), Central Electronics Limited (CEL) (Solar, Railway Signalling systems, Defence electronics), HEC (Heavy Engineering), including over 16 years at board/ CEO level. He is recognised as a turnaround expert.
During his tenure at Indian Railways Catering & Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC) as Director (Tourism & Marketing), he was responsible for setting up the entire tourism vertical of IRCTC. He led the increase in e-ticketing from 20,000 to Five Lakhs per day. As CEL’s Chairman & Managing Director, he was instrumental in transforming the company (facing chronic sickness with almost 90% of its net worth eroded) into a profit-making company. In his assignments, he played a major role in aligning stakeholder interests for value creation and delivering the highest quality products and services.
Dr. Shinghal has published several articles in leading national & international journals in Transport Economics & Logistics, and Energy. He has held eminent positions in various professional bodies and received several awards & recognitions for his work.
In honouring Dr. Nalin Shinghal, IIT Delhi recognises his contributions to Corporate Leadership and the Government & Public Service Sector. Through his achievements, Dr. Shinghal has brought glory to the name of the Institute.
