Dr. Amarpreet S. Sawhney received his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1987. He subsequently received his M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1992.
Dr. Sawhney is the President and CEO of I-Therapeutix, Inc. – a company focused on ophthalmic wound sealing and drug delivery.
Dr. Sawhney was the Founder and CEO of Confluent Surgical, a biosurgery company, based in Waltham, MA. Confluent was acquired by Covidien, Inc. in 2006. Before Confluent, Dr. Sawhney was the Technology Founder of Focal, Inc. (acquired by Genzyme in 2001).
In addition to being an entrepreneur, Dr. Sawhney has also created a platform to support other entrepreneurs. He and his partner, Fred Khosravi, have founded Incept LLC, whose vision is to serve as an “enabler” of healthcare entrepreneurs. Incept counts among its companies, Embolic Protection, Inc. (acquired by Boston Scientific), Access Closure, Inc. and Square One Inc. in California, MarketRx Inc. in New Jersey (recently acquired by Cognizant), in addition to I-Therapeutix. Dr. Sawhney currently serves on the board of directors of Square One, Soteira, Augmenix, and I-Therapeutix and is also a Founder of the latter two companies. Additionally he volunteers his time with other entrepreneurial organisations such as TiE Boston, MassMedic, and the E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year program. He is on the board of TiE Boston.
Through his foundation, Dr. Sawhney has been active in charitable causes that are dear to him, which include education as well as wildlife and the environment, with a focus on India.
Dr. Sawhney’s innovations are the subject of almost 100 issued and pending patents in biomaterials and bio-surgery. His inventions include several “first of a kind” surgical sealants to be approved by the United States FDA and one of them, DuraSeal, was recognised by the FDA as one of the most significant medical device approvals of 2005. Dr. Sawhney and Confluent have been recognised by several awards including the MassMedic best startup company award, Frost and Sullivan Product innovation award, MIT Global Indus Technovators Award, the E&Y regional entrepreneur of the year award, Mass High Tech All Star award, and the University of Texas Outstanding Young Engineering Graduate award. Dr. Sawhney has also been featured in several magazines and news media including the BBC, MIT Tech Review, Silicon India, XConomy, The Wall Street Reporter, CEOcast, Medical Device Daily, Mass Device, MedTech Insight, New Scientist, StartUp, Mass HighTech News, Boston Herald, etc.
