IIT Delhi in QS World University Rankings 2022

Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analysts released the 18th edition of the world’s International University rankings on June 9, 2021.  IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IISc Bengaluru,  secured 177th, 185th and 186th positions, respectively.

Reacting on the ranks, IIT Delhi Director said that top Indian institutions deserve to be among top 50 in any of the world university rankings. Explaining on why we are not among top 50 in QS World University ranking, IIT Delhi Director said it is important to know the parameters and their weightage on which the rankings are based.

World University Rankings: What parameters are considered?

1. Academic Reputation (40%): This score is completely based on survey. Top institutes in India need to talk more about themselves, the research work etc. Outreach is important. IIT Delhi got 45.9/100 in academic reputation.
2. Employer Reputation (10%): India is doing quite well in this parameter. This is also purely based on survey. IIT Delhi got 70.8/100 in this.
3. Faculty Student Ration (20%): India needs to hire more faculties in its top institutes across the country. Older IITs have added more students last year due to newly introduced EWS quota whereas, the number of faculties still remains same. IIT Delhi stands at 30.9/100 in this.
4. Citations per Faculty (20%): Increasing the number of faculties may affect this ratio but if the productivity improves this can be improved as well. IIT Delhi scored 94 in this few years back whereas now it stands at 70.
5. International Faculty (5%): IIT Delhi stands at 1.2/100 in this. Recruiting international faculties still riddles with policy issues. We must work on this and improve our global faculty hiring process.
6. International students (5%): Again IIT Delhi is just at 1.7/100 in this. IITs need to admit more international students. We are admitting more international students at masters and PhD level. However, we must intake international students at all level.
