Impact of Early Visual Input on Color Recognition, a recent study titled “Impact of Early Visual Experience on Later Usage of Color Cues,” published in Science, explores the crucial role early visual experiences play in later color recognition abilities. Conducted by researchers from IIT Delhi, MIT, and Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, the study examines how early visual input affects the use of color cues in visual recognition.

The research involved 10 congenitally blind children who gained sight through surgery later in life. Several months or years after their surgeries, these children showed a marked reduction in recognition performance when color cues were removed. In contrast, age-matched children with normal vision did not exhibit such deficits. This suggests that the late-sighted children's more mature color system at the onset of sight led to an over-reliance on chromatic cues.
